How to choose a chandelier

Size relative to the room: A common rule — add room length and width in feet, use that number in inches as a starting point for chandelier diameter. For a 12×14 foot dining room: 12+14=26, so a 24–28 inch chandelier is a good starting range.

Hanging height over a dining table: 30–34 inches from the table surface to the bottom of the chandelier. For ceilings higher than 8 feet, add 3 inches per additional foot of ceiling height.

Hanging height in an entryway: At least 7 feet of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the fixture. For double-height entryways, the chandelier can hang lower — but maintain 7 feet minimum clearance at the lowest point.

Style: Multi-arm chandeliers suit traditional and transitional dining rooms. Drum or disc chandeliers work in modern and Scandinavian interiors. Cluster chandeliers with multiple pendants on one mount bridge both aesthetics.

Chandelier vs. pendant vs. semi-flush

A chandelier is scaled to fill a space — dining room, entryway, double-height living room. A pendant is scaled to a surface below it — kitchen island, dining table, reading corner. A semi-flush mount is for lower ceilings where neither a chandelier nor a pendant can hang freely. The choice depends on ceiling height and room scale more than style preference.
